Dhaka has lodged strong protests with New Delhi against the killing of a Bangladesh national in Meghalaya and demanded investigation into the incident and punishment of the person involved with the killing.

The foreign ministry officially conveyed the protest note today and asked the Indian side for immediate handing over of the body.

According to media reports, Indian civilians shot dead Bangladeshi youth Delwar Hossain, 17, at Bichanakandi border under Goainghat upazila in Sylhet yesterday noon when he went to collect wood.

It has been learnt from the Indian side that investigation has already been initiated on the matter, said a foreign ministry press release.

The ministry also expressed deep concern over the successive incidents of killing of four Bangladesh nationals by Indian civilians within a span of three days in the bordering areas.

The Indian authorities have also been requested for greater awareness-raising efforts to sensitise and educate the Indian population in the bordering areas so that they do not take law into their own hands.
