Dhaka-bound trains barred in Tangail

Dhaka-bound trains from northern districts are being barred

All Dhaka-bound trains from northern districts are being barred at Tangail station from entering the capital today following the order of higher authorities.

Two trains--one from Rajshahi and another from Nilphamari--were sent back, Jalal Uddin, the station master of Gharinda Railway Station in Tangail, told The Daily Star.

Padma Express from Rajshahi and Nilsagar Express from Nilphamari have reached Gharinda Railway Station in Tangail at 7:10am and 7:40am correspondingly, which were later sent back to the respective districts, Jalal Uddin said.

Meanwhile, police, on information that miscreants boarding on the trains were heading towards the capital to carry out subversive activities, detained 200 people, reports our Tangail correspondent quoting Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, superintendent of police (SP) in Tangail.

Of the detainees, police took 97 to Tangail police lines, while the others were released.

Dhaka has already been delinked from other parts of the country as buses remain off road ahead of the Dhaka march of the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance.

BNP Chairperson and chief of the alliance Khaleda Zia declared the programme 'March for Democracy' on Tuesday demanding the parliamentary polls under a non-party government.
