Thousands of Muslims sought world peace, forgiveness and blessings for mankind and the Muslim Ummah as the second phase of Biswa Ijtema concluded today through Akheri Munajat (final supplication).

Prominent Islamic scholar from India Mawlana Saad led the 30-minute munajat from 11:23am at the Ijtema, the second largest congregation of the Muslims after the Hajj.

Devotees of all ages from home and abroad including women converged on the Ijtema venue on the bank of river Turag in Tongi to take part in the Akheri Munajat.

Around 3,000 foreigners joined the three-day-long second phase, our correspondent said quoting organisers.

During the munajat, people in and around the area raised their hands and started crying seeking blessing of the almighty for their peace and progress.

The gathering, some 20 kilometers off the capital, spilled over to the adjacent roads and areas around the venue.

The Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway and Ashulia-Baipail and Tongi Station Road-Mirer Bazar were off limits to vehicles from early today due to the huge rush of devotees.

Devotees who failed to reach the venue are taking part in the prayers sitting on nearby roads and open spaces.

The three-day first phase of the Ijtema, the second largest congregation of the Muslims, concluded on January 18.

At least three devotees died yesterday at the Ijtema ground, totalling the death toll to seven during the second phase alone.

As many as 136 couples got married without any dowry yesterday at the Ijtema venue.
