Detectives arrest members of mugging gang from Keraniganj

Detectives claimed to have arrested five members of an organised mugging gang. The arrestees are ringleader Shaon Ahmed Joy, Jahidul Islam, Yeamin, Ridoy and Babul, according to DB.

DB team (Lalbagh Division) investigated previous incidents and arrested them from South Keraniganj last night along with two pick-up vans, a machete and three knives.

AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said the group carjacked a pick-up van carrying with 22,000 eggs, stabbing two in the process. The pick-up van was heading towards Kamrangirchar.

In broad daylight, they are either masons, employees of a hotel or work at a decorator shop. But as night falls, they ride a covered van, roam the streets of the city and outskirts, looking for their prey, police said.

The gang was also responsible for mugging two people near BUET campus area on January 28, which was captured by CCTV cameras, detectives said. The DB official added that ringleader Shaon was arrested for a similar offence several months ago but after his release on bail, he organised the gang and re-engaged in robbery and mugging.
