The defence counsel appeared disappointed after a war crimes tribunal handed death to Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general ATM Azharul Islam today.

“The tribunal gave Azharul Islam death on three counts based on the evidence presented by the prosecution,” said Tajul Islam, the spokesperson of the defence counsel.

“But, it would have been appropriate if those evidence would have been thrown into the dustbin. Because, the evidence that has been presented is too feeble for punishment, let alone death verdict,” he claimed to reporters.

“We will go against this verdict and appeal to the Supreme Court. We hope that the apex court will find reason for our argument,” he added. “Azharul Islam has told us to appeal. He is confident that he did not commit these crimes.”

The Jamaat leader was given death in the gallows on three charges of genocide, mass killing and crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
