Reading for spirituality during Ramadan

A unique opportunity to enhance one's spirituality and reflect on one's faith

Ramadan is a month of reflection, self-discipline, and spiritual growth for Muslims all around the world. While fasting from dawn till dusk, praying more often, and engaging in acts of charity are vital parts of the process, Ramadan is also a time of increased reading, particularly of the Quran. For practising Muslims, it is important we explore the benefits of reading during Ramadan and understand how we can continue this practice throughout the year.

Reading the Quran during Ramadan provides a unique opportunity to enhance one's spirituality and reflect on one's faith. The Quran is not just a book to be read; it is a source of guidance, wisdom, and inspiration for practising Muslims. Reading it during Ramadan can bring one closer to Allah and help better understand one's purpose in life if they seek to follow it through the norms of Islam. It can also help one internalise the message of the Quran and apply its teachings to one's daily life.

Moreover, reading the Quran during Ramadan can bring about a sense of calm and inner peace. The act of reciting the verses and reflecting on its teachings can help one focus on the present moment and connect with one's inner self. This, in turn, can lead to a greater sense of mindfulness and awareness, which can be beneficial in all areas of life.

While reading the Quran is an essential part of Ramadan, it is not the only book that can be read during this month. Many Muslims choose to read other books that can help deepen their understanding of Islam and its teachings. These books can cover a wide range of topics, from Islamic history and theology to spirituality and personal development.

One such book that is popular among Muslims during Ramadan is The Sealed Nectar by Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri (1976). This biography of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provides a detailed account of his life and teachings.

Another popular text book is The Book of Assistance (1989) by Imam Al-Haddad. It is a collection of spiritual teachings and advice that can help one develop a closer relationship with Allah and enhance one's spirituality.

How can we continue the practice of reading throughout the year?

One way to do this is to set aside time each day for reading. This can be as short a time frame as 10-15 minutes a day. The key is to make it a regular part of one's daily routine. One can also aside a specific time of day for reading, such as early in the morning or before bedtime.

Another way to continue the practice of reading is to join a book club or reading group. This can be a great way to stay motivated and engaged in the practice of reading. It can also be an opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals who share similar interests and beliefs.

It is important to choose books that are relevant and meaningful to one's own spiritual journey. This may require some research and exploration to find books that resonate with one's beliefs and values. However, the effort is well worth it, as reading can be a powerful tool for personal growth and spiritual development.
