CU suspends 5 ‘Shibir’ men for bomb attack on teachers

The authorities of Chittagong University today suspended five activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir for allegedly carrying out bomb attacks on teachers on September 10 that left 15 people injured.  
The CU syndicate took the decision at a three-hour meeting that began at the university’s Institute of Fine Arts around 10:30am today, said Prof Dr Mozaffar Ahmad Chowdhury, a syndicate member and a teacher of philosophy department.  
The authorities also issued show cause notices asking the students why they will not be expelled from the university, he said.
The students are Yusuf, Touhidul, Amin Uddin and Ibrahim Khalil, students of Islamic Studies Department and Hakim, a student of mathematics department.
On September 22, Yusuf and Touhidul, who are now in police custody, gave their confessional statement before Senior Judicial Magistrate of Chittagong under the Section 164.  
Meanwhile, Chittagong University Teachers' Association (Cuta) staged a sit-in in front of the university’s fine arts institute during the syndicate meeting, demanding exemplary punishment to the students who were involved in the attack.  
At least 15 teachers sustained injuries as Shibir activists allegedly hurled crude bombs targeting two university buses carrying the teachers near the campus on September 10.
On the same day, two cases were filed against at least 86 leaders, activists and supporters of the Shibir, including its campus unit president, in connection with the attack.
