Ctg Shibir man crushed under truck while trying to torch it

Jubo League activist beaten dead by ‘blockaders’ in Feni

An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir has been crushed under the wheels of a truck in Chittagong which he was trying to torch the vehicle while a Jubo League man was beaten to death by blockaders in Feni.

Our Chittagong correspondent reports, Zobayer, 21, and a Shibir man, came under the wheels of a truck when he along with three others was trying to set the vehicle on fire at Chunoti around 3:00am today on the ninth day of blockade, said Md Shahjahan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lohagara Police Station.

Zobayer died on the spot, the OC said adding that identities and whereabouts of the injured could not be known immediately.

In Feni, unidentified assailants beat dead Belal Hossain, a local activist of ruling party’s youth front Jubo League, in Sonagazi upazila last night, reports our district correspondent quoting local Awami League leaders.

Witnesses said the incident began from vandalism by blockade supporters in Bhairab Chowdhury Bazar area on the Sonagazi-Muhuri project road around 9:00pm last night.

Police and local Awami League supporters chased at the blockade supporters, who had vandalised at least three auto-rickshaws at the spot, and dispersed them, they said.

After police went away from the spot, two Jubo League activists Belal Hossain and Mobarak Hossain, 28, were attacked at the scene. Witnesses said they saw the assailants flee the spot when they arrived hearing the screams of the victims.

The injured were rushed to Feni Sadar Hospital and later referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital after their condition deteriorated. Belal succumbed on the way.

Sonagazi upazila Awami League joint general secretary and Amirabad upazila Chairman Jahirul Alam told The Daily Star this morning that Belal was beaten to death.

Atiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Model Police Station, told The Daily Star that he had heard of the incident, but could not tell details while filing of this report.

The BNP-led 20-party alliance is observing the blockade since January 5 protesting confinement of BNP Chairperson Khaleda at her Gulshan office in Dhaka.
