Criminal shoots Tangail cop dead

An assistant sub-inspector of Tangail Model Police Station, who was critically injured as a criminal shot him on Friday night, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday morning.

The incident happened when the victim, Nurul Islam, 30, along with a police team went to arrest a criminal at Purbo Adalat Para in Tangail district town around 11:30pm.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team from the Model Police Station raided the house of Ulka, chief of Ulka Bahini that runs criminal activities in the town, to nab him, said Akhtaruzzaman, officer-in-charge of the police station. Sensing the presence of police, Ulka opened fire on them. Nurul was hit by bullets, said the police official, adding that Ulka, however, managed to flee the scene.

Nurul was admitted to Tangail General Hospital in a critical condition and later he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition was worsening.

Nurul hailed from Ashulia in Dhaka and had been serving in the police department for around 10 years.

Ulka stands accused in several criminal cases of which he has been chargesheeted in three cases. He is now on bail, said police.

The namaz-e-janaza of Nurul was held at Rajarbagh Police Lines central mosque in the capital yesterday afternoon.

Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker, Additional IGP Shahidul Islam, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Abdul Jalil and other senior police officials attended the janaza.

Hassan Mahmood told reporters that police were trying to arrest Ulka.

Police detained four people in the district town in connection with the killing yesterday night.
