‘Criminal’ killed in Rab ‘shootout’

An alleged criminal was killed in a “shootout” with the members of Rapid Action Battalion in Sandwip upazila of Chittagong this afternoon.
The Rab men also recovered 30 firearms including local and foreign made rifles, pistols and around 49 rounds of bullets from their hideouts in a jungle in the area.
The deceased was identified as Mosharraf Hossain, 33, of Bawria village in the upazila, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
Acting on a tip-off, the lawmen picked up Mosharraf and his four associates in front of Mostafizur Rahman Degree College around 12:30pm.
Following their confessional statements, the Rab member launched a raid at Bawria Gangan Bari area to recover firearms.
When the Rab members along with the detainees reached the area, Mosharraf’s associates started firing at them indiscriminately and the law enforcers were forced to retaliate, Squadron Leader Mahfuzur Rahman, company commander of Rab-7, told The Daily Star.
Mosharraf was killed by the bullets fired from his associates’ guns, he claimed.
Mosharraf was accused of at least 25 to 30 criminal cases including robbery, the Rab official said.
AHM Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sandwip Police Station, said Mosharraf’s body was recovered and sent to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
