Youth arrested for abducting 6-year-old; got acquainted with child’s father a year ago

Police arrested a youth from Dhaka's Keraniganj area early today, on charge of abducting a six-year-old boy and demanding Tk 1.2 lakh from his family as ransom.

A team of police arrested Nazmul Sheikh (22) and rescued the child, Zubair, from Kaliganj Bazar area around 4:00am, said Mohammad Shahjahan, a sub-inspector of Demra Police Station.

The SI said Nazmul got acquainted with victim's father Rajib Bhuiyan while he was commuting on latter's auto-rickshaw a year ago.

Upon hearing that Rajib's son was unwell, Nazmul visited the child and bought some medicine and fruits for him. Thus, he developed a relationship with the family, the SI said, quoting Zubair's family members.

After a year, the man planned to abduct the child.

Around 8:30pm on February 27, as Zubair went to a nearby shop to buy chips, Nazmul abducted him and kept him confined in the market.

He called the child's father on that night and demanded Tk 1.20 lakh, threatening to kill him or sell his kidney, Shahjahan said.

The family paid Tk 10,000 through mobile financial service and later lodged a case with Demra Police Station, the SI said.

After getting the money, Nazmul switched off his phone but police made the arrest through technological analysis.
