Two more Hefajat leaders arrested over March mayhem

Police today arrested two more leaders of Hefajat-e-Islam in connection with the violence surrounding the organisation's protest of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in late March.

The arrestees are Mowlana Md Arif and Mowlana Md Tajul Islam.

Mowlana Arif is the science and technology affairs secretary of Hathazari municipality Hefajat unit while Mowlana Tajul is the assistant dawah affairs secretary of Hefajat's Hathazari upazila unit, said Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam.

"Their names were learned during investigation of the cases filed over the recent Hefajat mayhem and they were arrested from Hathazari municipality area," he said.

They were shown arrested in two cases filed with Hathazari Police Station over the violence on March 26.

Police said a total of 10 cases were filed with Hathazari Police Station accusing over 100 Hefajat leaders and BNP men including Hefajat Chief Junayed Babunagari over the March 26 violence, while more than 6,000 unidentified persons were accused in the cases.

Four including three madrasa students were killed during the clash.

More than a dozen Hefajat leaders have been arrested in connection with the violence on March 26, 27 and 28 this year.
