Murder accused inmate missing: 2 Ctg prison guards suspended for negligence

Prison authorities today suspended two prison guards in Chattogram Central Jail, and withdrew its jailer and deputy jailer, for their negligence in discharging duty after a murder accused inmate went missing from prison.

Brig Gen Mominur Rahman Mamun, inspector general of prisons, confirmed the matter and said a departmental case was filed against another prison guard in this connection.

The suspended prison guards are Younus Mia, assistant chief prison guard, and his colleague Nazim Uddin. The withdrawn jailer, Rafiqul Islam, was attached to the headquarters of the Department of Prisons. The deputy jailer, whose name could not be known immediately, was attached to the office of Deputy Inspector General of Prisons in Chattogram, the IG prisons told The Daily Star.

Kamal Haider, another assistant chief prison guard, was sued in a departmental case, for his negligence in discharging duty on time. The IGP prisons said a three-member committee, led by a DIG prisons, was formed to investigate the incident.

Earlier, the Chattogram Central jail authorities lodged a general diary with Kotwali Police Station after Farhad Hossain Rubel, a murder-accused inmate, went missing on Saturday morning. Officer-in-charge (OC) Md Nezam Uddin of Kotwali Police Station said the accused has been in jail since February 9 in connection with a murder case filed with Sadarghat Police Station.
