Mitu murder: PBI seeks information on woman Babul allegedly had affair with

The Police Bureau of Investigation has sent a letter to the former employers of a woman in connection with a case filed over the 2016 murder of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of ex-superintendent of police Babul Akter.

On May 12 this year, the victim's father Mosharraf Hossain filed a murder case against Mitu's husband and seven others with Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram. In the case statement, Mosharraf alleged that Babul was involved in an extramarital affair with the woman when he was stationed in Cox's Bazar as an additional SP. She is not named as an accused in the case.

PBI sent a letter to the woman's former employers seeking information about her yesterday, reports our Chattogram correspondent.

PBI Inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma, also the investigation officer of the case, told The Daily Star, "For the sake of investigation of the murder case, we have sent a letter to the offices [of the woman's former employers] seeking information on her."

In 2013, Babul had gotten two books as gifts from a woman, and he wrote about his extramarital affairs on different pages of the books, according to the case statement.

PBI officials probing the Mitu murder case sent the two books, seized from Babul, as "evidence of his extramarital affair", to the CID for forensic examination.

On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son to his school bus stop at the port city's GEC intersection. After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men with the Panchlaish Police Station.

On May 11 this year, Chattogram PBI summoned Babul to its office for interrogation. He failed to give satisfactory answers to the detectives and was taken into PBI custody. The following day, Mitu's father filed a murder case against eight people, making Babul the prime accused in the case.
