A court in Chattogram today asked former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter's father to produce Mitu and Babul's children before the Investigation Officer (IO) within 15 days in connection with the Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case filed with Panchlaish police station.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnaz Rahman passed the order after IO Inspector Sontosh Kumar Chakma of Police Investigation Bureau (PBI)'s Chattogram metro unit submitted an application requesting to produce the son and daughter of Babul as witnesses of the case.

Following the appeal, the court asked Abdul Wadud Mia, father of Babul Akter, and Babul's brother Habibur Rahman Labu to present the children before the IO in 15 days, said the court sources.

Babul's children are now with their grandfather in Magura after Babul was arrested in the Mitu murder case filed by Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain on May 12 this year.

Contacted Inspector Sontosh Kumar Chakma, IO of the case, told The Daily Star "The boy is an eyewitness of the killing and he had seen the killers that time. Apart from that, the daughter is also an important witness of the case. PBI needs to grill them to learn some information from the kids."

After filing the Mitu murder case accusing Babul Akter and seven others, Mitu's father alleged that he is unaware of the location of his two grandkids and expressed concern about their safety and future.

On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son to his school bus stop at the port city's GEC intersection. After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men with the Panchlaish Police Station.
