Man injured after councillor ‘opens fire’ over forming mosque committee in Ctg

A man suffered bullet injury after a councillor allegedly opened fire at him over dispute centering the formation of a mosque committee in Raozan upazila of Chattogram today.

The incident took place at Abuddar Bari of Gohira union in Raozan at 2:30 pm.

The councillor was identified as Alamgir Ali, councillor of number-1 ward of Raozan municipality.

The injured was identified as Shahbuddin Khan (49), son of late Mojibul Haque hailing from the same village.

Abdullah Al Mamun, younger brother of the victim told The Daily Star that there had been a dispute over forming of a mosque committee in their village.

"The rival party named the mosque after one of their ancestor Sheikh Ibrahim. When we were discussing the matter, the councillor appeared at the scene and opened fire at my brother," he said.

Shilabroto Das, nayek of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police outpost told The Daily Star that Shahabuddin was admitted to CMCH at 4:00 pm and the bullet with which he was hit on his left leg appeared to have been shot from a nine mm pistol.

The mobile phone number of councillor Alamgir Ali was found switched off.

Shamim Anwar, assistant police superintendent (ASP) of (Rangunia-Raozan) circle told The Daily Star that they have learned about the incident and said "We will take action as per law."
