Four members of Hefajat-e-Islam were placed on remand in Narayanganj today, a day after their arrest in two cases filed over the mayhem centering the "confinement" of Hefajat's Joint General Secretary Mamunul Haque at a resort in Sonargaon upazila of the district.

Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Kabir granted three-day remand each for the four accused in the cases filed by the police, our local correspondent reports.

The accused are Sonargaon upazila Hefajat Amir Mahiuddin (50), vice president Moazzem Hossain (49), secretary Shahjahan Shiblee (43), and a member Iqbal Hossain (50) who is also president of Khelafat Majlish's Sonargaon upazila unit.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested the four yesterday and handed them over to police this morning, said Rab-11 Senior Assistant Director Jashim Uddin Chowdhury.

Rab-11 members, acting on a tip-off, yesterday afternoon arrested five people including the four from Dhaka's Jurain Rail Line area, he said.

Later, after interrogation, Rab released Ferdaus Rahman, Hefajat's Narayanganj city unit president, as he was not accused in the case, the official added.

He also said that at least six cases were filed in connection with the vandalism and chaos over "confinement" of Mamunul Haque on April 3. Of them, police filed two cases.

Mohiuddin is the prime accused in one of the cases and all four went into hiding since the cases were filed, he added.

Jayedul Alam, superintendent of police in Sadar upazila, said that they sought seven days' remand for the accused before the court today.
