Locals attack Pirojpur police during drive; 5 injured

Five police personnel were injured in an attack by locals when they were returning to the police station after arresting an accused of a theft case in Pirojpur Sadar upazila last night.

Police so far picked up seven people for their alleged involvement in the attack, reports our Pirojpur correspondent quoting police.

Confirming the incident, Pirojpur Superintendent of Police Hayatul Islam Khan told The Daily Star that two of the injured policemen were undergoing treatment at a hospital while the rest returned to barrack after receiving primary treatment.

A case has been filed in this connection, said Additional SP (crimes and administration) Mollah Azad Hossain.

According to local police sources, police conducted a drive at Kumarkhali area and arrested accused Mehedi. When they reached Police Lines Road, some locals attacked them to snatch away the arrestee.

Later, the accused was brought to the local police station.
