A Chattogram court today placed former superintendent of police Babul Akter in a five-day remand, in a case filed by his father-in-law in connection with the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in Chattogram on June 5, 2016.

Magistrate Sarowar Jahan of Chattogram Metropolitan Court passed the remand order after Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) produced Babul before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

After hearing both the sides, the court granted his five-day remand and also asked PBI to submit its probe report before the court within 10 days, said Babul's lawyer Advocate Arifur Rahman.

Earlier in the day, Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain filed the case against Babul and seven others with Chattogram's Panchlaish Police Station, said Abul Kashem Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of the police station.

The seven other accused are: Kamrul Islam Shikder Musa, his elder brother Saidul Sikder Shakur, Motaleb Mia Wasim, Anwar Hossain, firearms supplier Ehteshamul Haque alias Bhola, Md Shahjahan and Khairul Islam Kalu.

While talking to reporters, the plaintiff alleged that his daughter was murdered centring Babul's extra-marital affair.

On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead when she was walking with her son to his school bus stop at the port city's GEC intersection.

Yesterday, Babul was taken into PBI custody in Chattogram from his residence in Dhaka's Mohammadpur.

This is the second time Babul has been taken into police custody.

On June 25, 2016, he was interrogated in police custody for 15 hours. He was later relieved of his job on September 6, 2016. Babul now works at a private company.

Soon after the murder, Babul filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station against three unnamed accused.

During the investigation, law enforcers found involvement of the seven accused against whom Mitu's father filed the case today.

Investigators so far arrested five persons including Motaleb Mia Wasim, Anwar Hossain, firearms supplier Ehteshamul Haque alias Bhola, Md Shahjahan and Musa's elder brother Saidul Sikder Shakur.
