Death of college student: Bring Bashundhara MD to book, say family members and activists

Sayem Sobhan Anvir

Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir must be arrested in connection with the case filed over the death of a college girl at a Gulshan flat in the capital, demanded activists and the victim's family members.

The arrest is a must for ensuring justice, they said while attending a press conference at the National Press Club today.

The press conference was organised by the Muktijoddha Sangshad Santan Command.

The campaigners also asked the investigators to update the nation with the case updates.

The victim's elder sister filed a case with Gulshan Police Station against Anvir for "abetting suicide" on April 27, a day after the girl was found dead at the flat.

The Muktijoddha Sangshad Santan Command President Mehedi Hasan read out the demands and their position in the case.

The victim's sister and other descendants of freedom fighters were present at the press conference.

In the written statement, Mehedi detailed various information related to the death of the girl.

He placed a five-point demand and called on the government to bring Anvir to book. He also asked the authorities to interrogate Anvir's mother, their family friend Faria Mahabub Piasha, Mishu Hasan, and flat owner Sharmin Shahed.

"The role of police [in this case] has created suspicion and concern among mass people as the main accused is influential. Shall we think that the administration is hostage to them?" Mehedi asked.

Mehedi also said the Bashundhara group has been actively defaming the victim by using a section of media.

At the press conference, the victim's sister expressed frustration and dissatisfaction as police have not yet arrested or even interrogated Anvir.

The family members said that they want the police to ensure an impartial and speedy investigation.

A Dhaka court earlier directed the authorities to submit the probe report by May 30.

An officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Gulshan division), seeking anonymity, said they would not be able to complete the report by the deadline as they were yet to get the autopsy report.

Sources in the Forensic Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical College said the autopsy report was yet to be completed and might take a month and a half or two to get the final autopsy report.

On April 26, police recovered the body of the girl hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom. Her legs were touching the bed and both knees were a little bent.
