B'baria Hefajat leader who quit earlier, now arrested

Police have arrested Mufti Abdur Rahim Quasemi, the former joint general secretary of the Hefajat-e-Islam Brahmanbaria district and a member of the central committee, who earlier resigned from the organisation seeking justice of those involved in the violence on March 26 to 28 in the district.

He was arrested from Bhadughar in Brahmanbaria municipality area around 4:00pm today.

Md Imtiaz Ahammed, officer-in-charge of Special Branch of the district police told The Daily Star that it was proven in the investigation that Quasemi is involved in the recent violence by Hefajat-e-Islam. He was also involved in the communal violence in Brahmanbaria that took place on January 12, 2016.

Earlier on April 23, he had resigned from Hefajat seeking justice of those involved in the violence. He announced his resignation in a written statement to local journalists.

So far 415 people have been arrested in 56 cases over mayhem in Brahmanbaria. Some 414 people have been named in these cases alongside more than 39,000 unknown individuals.
