AL leader in Dhaka's Darus Salam area sued for torturing wife

A woman has been driven out of her house along with her mentally ill child for failing to pay dowry in the capital's Darus Salam area.

ABM Mazhar Anam, president of Awami League (Darus Salam unit), allegedly asked his wife Firoza Parvin to leave the house along with their mentally ill child demanding Tk 10 lakh in dowry.

Firoza filed a dowry case against seven persons making her husband Mazhar prime accused in the case, Sub-Inspector Riaz Hossen of Darus Salam Police Station confirmed to The Daily Star.

According to the case statement, Firoza and Mazhar got married on February 21, 2008. As per the demand of the bridegroom, Firoza's family gave gold ornaments, furniture and Tk 20 lakh in cash and other items during their wedding.

Shortly after the marriage, Mazhar started to pressuring Firoza for dowry. Thinking of her son, she used to bring money for Mazhar from her elder brother. Even after getting the money, her husband kept torturing her for more money, the case statement said.

Recently, Mazhar demanded Tk 10 lakh dowry from Firoza but she failed to pay the amount. Due to this, she was beaten and tortured by family members of Mazhar who removed her from the house on January 25, according to the case statement.

Police today arrested accused Mazhar after conducting a raid at his house.
