1 killed, 10 hurt in Madaripur clash

A man was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between villagers in Midharkandi village under Madaripur Sadar Upazila this noon.

Five houses were also vandalised during the incident, reports our Faridpur correspondent quoting locals and police.

The deceased was identified as Sayed Bhuyan (38), son of late Nur Sobahan Bhuyan of Midharkandi village.

According to locals, there had been a longstanding dispute between Ferdous Talukdar and Rahman Mridha of the village over establishing supremacy in the locality.

Julhas Talukder, a follower of Ferdous, was attacked and injured allegedly by Rahman Mridha's men while he was returning home from a local market on February 15. He is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), they said.

Both groups today locked into a clash over this issue with locally made weapons, leaving 11 people injured including Sayed Bhuyan, the local people also said.

Sayed was critically injured and was taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex and was referred to be taken to Dhaka for better treatment as his condition worsened.

He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dhaka, his wife Mahamuda Aktar said.

Other injured have been admitted to Madaripur General Hospital for treatment.

"Suddenly some people attacked Sayed when he was alone and hacked him with sharp weapons. Some other people were also injured when they went to save Sayed," said Mirjan Mirdha, an eye witness of the incident.

Sayed's wife Mahamuda claimed that her husband was not involved in any group but still he had to die over dispute among others.

Rahman Mridha said, "None of my supporters attacked them. Instead, followers of Ferdous attacked us and vandalised our houses."

Confirming the incident, Muhammad Mahabub Hasan, superintendent of police in Madaripur, said, "The clash took place between the villagers over establishing supremacy in the locality."

"On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Legal steps will be taken to this end," he said.

Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avoid any further untoward incident, the SP added.
