1 arrested in connection with death of university student after fall from building

Police arrested one person in connection with the death of Tajrian Mostafa Moumita, a student of Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area on Friday.

The arrestee was identified as Adnan. He is a friend of a flat owner's son Farjad Ahmed Faijar, the same building where the victim's family stayed.

Both Adnan and the flat owner's son used to stalk Moumita, the victim's family alleged. Thakur Das Modak, inspector (operations) of Kalabagan Police Station, said they arrested Adnan on Monday night.

Meanwhile, the deceased's father Kamal Mostafa Khan filed a murder case with Kalabagan Police Station. In the case statement, the complainant alleged his daughter was pushed off from the rooftop of the seven-storey building.

He suspected that Faijar and Adnan along with three other youths—Tanvir, Trinoy and Oparijita-- were behind the murder.

Moumita was second among three sisters. After passing HSC from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, she moved to Malaysia with her parents. They family returned to Bangladesh in June, last year because of Covid-19 pandemic and rented the flat in Dhanmondi.

According to the case statement, Moumita went to the rooftop around 4:30pm on Friday. Her father had texted her to return home quickly. Moumita replied that she was getting down within a few minutes but her body was found in front of the building an hour later.
