The two Garo women who were stabbed and gagged to death in Dhaka's Kalachandpur last Tuesday, were killed for money, lawmen said today after arrest of the "murderers".

All the four arrested in this regard said to have confessed to committing the murder, and said, they planned to steal money from the house to celebrate Easter Sunday.

This morning, Rapid Action Battalion claimed arrest of Sanjib Chiran, 21, "the murder plotter", and his associates Probin Sangma, 19, Raju Sangma, 24, and Shuvo Chisim, 18.

They were held from Sherpur yesterday evening, said Mufti Mahmud Khan, legal and media wing director of Rab, told The Daily Star. "They planned to steal money for Easter Sunday."

According to how the incident has been described, Sanjib, a relative of the victims, made the whole plan. On March 19, Sanjib, Shuvo and Probin came to Dhaka from Mymensingh. The trio took Raju and went to the victim's house the next day.

In the house, the arrestees got Sujata drunk on local liquor and then strangulated her mother. They then stabbed Sujata multiple times. However, they could not find any money and left the house locking it from outside.

The arrestees confessed their deeds during primary interrogation.

Sujata and her mother Besat were found dead in their flat, at Dhaka's Kalachandpur, last Tuesday. Autopsy found 14 stabs on Sujata.

Family members said Sujata had been living in the flat along with her mother, husband, two daughters and a granddaughter for the last two years.

The suspect, Sanjib lived with the family about one-and-a-half years ago. He settled in Mymensingh after he got married. Sanjib is a nephew of Sujata and grandson of Besat.
