A play written by Abdus Salam, a marginal farmer of a remote village in Char Sirta Nayapara in Sadar upazila, was staged recently.
The play titled “Bangabandu'r Ghoshanay Muktijuddha” (Liberation War through the declaration of Bangabandhu), directed by Md. Mofazzal Hossain was the maiden staging of the drama and the 10th performance of Shah Alam Natya Goshthi, a local drama group.
The cast of the play included Quddus Mistri, Nazim Fakir, Mofazzal Hossain, Emdadul Haque, Dr. Shahjahan Kabir, Azizul Haque, Sabuj Ahmed, Chittaranjan Basak, Momata, Runa and Kabita, among others.
People in their hundreds from adjacent villages thronged the venue.
A discussion was also held marking the staging of the play.
Mayor of Mymensingh municipality Ekramul Haque Titu was the chief guest at the programme.
Md. Ashraf Hossain, senior VP of Mymensingh Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Balikhan UP chairman Shamsul Alam; Reazul Karim, Abu Hanifa Sarker, Abdul Mannan Sarker, Nesar Uddin Ahmed and Abu Bakar Siddiqui were present.
The speakers said that the play was a creative endeavour of Abdus Salam, a farmer who revealed his talent by writing a play. The creative work of the writer will inspire many others to go in for creative writing to enrich our literature, the speakers added.
Talking to this correspondent, Abdus Salam, 52, who has studied up to class ten, said that he was devoted to writing ever since he was a young boy. So far he has written two romantic jatra pala-“Alam Mala” and “Kayes Mala”, staged  several times by a jatra group.
Son of late Habibullah Bepari and father of seven children, Abdus Salam said, he was compelled to live on 200 decimal of land that he cultivates year round.
“Financial hardship did not stop me from writing and I needed about five years to complete the play,” said  Salam.
