Crackdown on in Malaysia

At least 331 expatriate workers were detained in Malaysia on the second day of a nationwide crackdown on illegal migrants.
Of them, 191 are Filipinos and 120 are Indonesians and the rest 20 are Bangladeshi, Indian and Sri Lankan, reports Malaysian newspapers.
Earlier on Tuesday, Malaysian police detained 1,565 illegal expatriates, including 255 Bangladeshis.
Mantu Kumar Biswas, labour counsellor of Bangladesh high commission in Kuala Lumpur yesterday told The Daily Star that they did not know how many Bangladeshis were arrested yesterday.
The number of Bangladeshi detainees may rise as there are still many Bangladeshis staying there illegally, he said over the phone.  
Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi advised the employers of the detained workers to get them released after producing their work permits,

according to a Malaysian daily.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) had called for the postponement of the crackdown.
MCA President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said many traders had complained that they had been affected by the crackdown, especially during the       busy shopping season leading up to the Chinese New Year.
“Some have been forced to close their businesses temporarily due to the lack of workers. We hope the government can postpone the operation to help them through this festival,” said Liow at a press conference.
