Two police personnel die of Covid-19

Two police personnel, who earlier tested positive for Covid-19, died at Central Police Hospital in Dhaka early today.

One of the deceased, Chhoton Deb, 29, a constable of special branch of Cox's Bazar District police, got admitted at the hospital nearly a month ago after he tested positive.

A week ago, he was shifted to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit where he breathed his last around 1:30am, said Saiful Islam Shanto, an additional superintendent of police at the hospital.

The Cox's Bazar Police superintendent has expressed condolences over his death. The body is being sent to his village home in Chattogram for cremation.

Chhoton was the first police personnel from the district to die with Covid-19 infection.

Meanwhile, Sirajul Islam, who was admitted at the hospital after being diagnosed with Covid-19, died around 4:30am today, says a press release sent by Police Headquarters.

He joined Bangladesh Police on January 10 in 1994. He left behind his wife two sons and a daughter. His body is being sent to his village home at Trishal upazila in Mymensingh.

With them, at least 53 members of police died so far across the country after being infected with Covid-19 while discharging their duties. 

As of Tuesday, the total number of infections from Covid-19 in the police force was around 13,032, according to a tally of Police Headquarters.

Of the infected, nearly 9,500 have recovered and most of them rejoined their work.
