Court orders release of innocent CNG driver

Court orders release of innocent CNG driver

A Chittagong court today ordered the release of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver eight days after police arrested him mistakenly in a dowry case.
Judge Md Zakir Hossain of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 passed the order after the plaintiff identified the arrestee -- Md Jasim Uddin -- was not the real accused before the court, the court sources told our Chittagong correspondent.
The court also issued a showcase notice to the officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station and asked him to submit a written answer in this regard before the court within a short time.
MA Naser, public prosecutor (PP) of the tribunal, said police arrested Jasim by mistake as both the names of the accused and the arrestee were same.
One Parvin Akhter lodged the case against her husband Jasim Uddin with Lohagara Police Station on charge of torturing her for dowry in September last year.
Later, the court issued an arrest warrant against Jasim, son of Abul Kasem, after he was found guilty in the judicial investigation submitted before the court on April 24.
However, on August 31, police picked up Jasim Uddin, son of Abul Hossain of Lohagara. Later, he was sent to jail.
Meanwhile, on September 2, Parvin Akhter in a petition informed the court that the arrestee is not the accused and real Jasim is now safely moving in the locality, said the PP.
Police also submitted a report before the court that CNG driver Jaim is not the real accused. Police mistakenly had arrested him as the two names are same, the report stated.
