Police arrested the prime accused in a case filed for stabbing a schoolgirl at Upashaharpara of Jhenidah town on Monday as she rejected his proposal to have a romantic affair.

Arrestee Litu Hossain, 22, was hit by a bullet during a drive as police had to open fire when he charged two handmade bombs targeting police, said Akbar Ali Sheikh, additional Superintendent of Police in Jhenidah.

On receiving information that Litu had taken shelter at an abandoned building at Nirishimo village in Jhenidah Sadar upazila, a team of police cordoned off the area around 3:00am, the Additional SP said.

Police managed to detain Litu with bullet wounds, the police official said.

Meanwhile, the victim's mother said the youth had been stalking her daughter for long.

As the girl rejected his proposal, he stabbed her on the face and right hand indiscriminately, the mother added.

She is now undergoing treatment at Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.

The victim's father filed a case, accusing five people including Litu.

With this, police have arrested four of the accused in this connection so far.
