Youth to die for killing friend

A court here yesterday sentenced a youth to death for killing his friend over payment of loan amount in 2009.

Judge Ziaur Rahman of Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court handed down the verdict in presence of the accused.

The convict is Abdul Malek, son of Mahtabuddin of Kantinagar village in Shibganj upazila of the district.

According to the prosecution, Rubel of Kantinagar village asked his friend Malek to return Tk 18,000 which, earlier, he gave him as loan. They left for Chohan Beel, a water body, in the district on September 4 in 2009 where Malek hit Rubel with a sharp weapon, leaving him dead on the spot. Later, he dumped the body in a sugarcane field.

Police recovered the body after over a month and arrested Malek in this regard.  

The victim's father Tobjul Islam filed a murder case with Shibganj Police Station on October 10 the same year.

Investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector Jamaluddin pressed charges against Malek on January 31 in 2010.

After examining the deposition of 17 prosecution witnesses and other relevant documents, the judge found Malek guilty and pronounced the verdict.
