Work together to ensure freedom, human rights: Khaleda

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia today called upon the people for working together to ensure sovereignty, democracy and human rights.

“One-party authoritarian rule has been materialised in the country again by holding a unilateral election on January 5, 2014,” Khaleda said marking January 24 as the day of mass upsurge that took place in 1969.

On this day in 1969, students and people waged a strong movement against the then Pakistani autocratic regime of Ayub Khan. The movement turned into a mass upsurge following the martyrdom of Motiur Rahman, a student of class IX of Nabakumar Institute in the city.

The rights of freedom of expression and free thinking have been snatched by killing the country’s democracy through the election, the former prime minister alleged.

Upholding spirit of the 1969’s mass upsurge, Khaleda said, “We will have to work together to ensure our freedom, sovereignty and people’s fundamental and human rights.”

The BNP-led 20-party alliance chief made the call in a press statement this afternoon.
