[Watch] Video clip showing Santals being allegedly attacked

A video clip of Santals being attacked around the Bagda-farm area of Rangpur Sugar Mill’s disputed land in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha was released in social media on December 21, 2016.

The 1:18 minute long video clip uploaded on Facebook shows how police and possible hired goons of the sugar mill attacked the Santals on November 6.

“We got the video clip on December 21 and we are trying to identify the man being carried,” said Rafayet Hasda a leader of evicted Santals of Madarpur and Joypur villages.

“This clip shows everything that happened on that day, the action of police and the desperation of the sugar mill’s staff and officials and their hired goons”, said Philimino Baske a leader of Land recovery committee.

The clip went viral soon after it was uploaded on Facebook on December 21.

On November 6, police reportedly opened fire and lobbed teargas shells during an eviction drive at Sahebganj sugarcane farm, leaving at least two Santals dead and several others injured.

In protest, the Santals fired arrows at police personnel and Rangpur Sugar Mills workers, who joined the eviction drive. At least 25 people, including nine policemen, were wounded.
