Arrest warrant issued against Habiganj ‘war criminal’

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 today issued arrest warrant against a Habiganj man who allegedly committed crimes during the Liberation War in 1971.

The three-member tribunal passed the order following a petition moved by Prosecutor Zead Al Malum.

Prosecution declined to mention the name as the accused was yet to be arrested.

Moving the petition, Malum said investigation against him started on February 16 last year and investigation officer of the case has already found his involvement in crimes committed in 1971.

The accused is an influential person of his locality and most his family members are now living in US, Malum said.

He may flee the country unless he was arrested and kept in jail, he added.

The accused was the Razakar commander of his union and his father was a member of anti-liberation Peace Committee of their union in Habigang, Prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chaman told The Daily Star.

He was found involved in at least five incidents of killing, rape, torture and abduction in the district, Chaman said.
