War trial: Ex-Jamaat MP among 6 Gaibandha men indicted

A special tribunal in Dhaka today framed three charges against six persons of Gaibandha, including a former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker, for their alleged involvement with crimes committed during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.

The three-member panel of International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Justice Anwarul Haque fixed August 2 for starting the trial with opening statement of prosecution and recording depositions of witnesses.

The accused are Abu Saleh Md Abdul Aziz Mia, 65, a former Jamaat lawmaker and alleged commander of local Razakar Bahini; Ruhul Amin alias Manju, 61; Abdul Latif, 61; Abu Muslim Md Ali, 59; Najmul Huda, 60; and Abdur Rahim Mia, 62.

All the accused, now on run, are all from Sundarganj upazila in Gaibandha.

The three charges are looting and killing of a Hindu man of Moujamali village in Gaibandha Sadar upazila and murdering a Chhatra League leader and 13 chairmen and members of five unions in Sundarganj.

According to the prosecution, the accused had link with Razakar Bahini, an auxiliary force of the Pakistani army, and were involved in torturing, killing, and genocide.
