Vow to resist abuse of drugs

Around 1,000 people, including government officials, public representatives, freedom fighters, teachers, imams and marriage registrars in Kalihati upazila  yesterday vowed to resist drug abuse.

They took the oath at an anti-drug rally jointly organised by Kalihati upazila and Narcotics Control Department.

Speakers urged all to take coordinated steps to solve the problem of drug abuse for the sake of the young generation.

They emphasised raising awareness among the guardians so that they can prevent their children from taking drugs.

The speakers also urged the headmasters and principals to create awareness among the students about the bad effects of drugs and the destruction caused by drug abuse. Imams should also speak against drugs during the sermon, they said. Moreover, tougher laws will have to be made so that arrested drug traders could not get out of jail after getting bail , the speakers said.

The speakers also emphasised launching of mobile court drives to prevent drug peddling in the country.

Tangail Deputy Commissioner (DC) Khan Mohammad Nurul Amin and Superindent of Police Mahbub Alam spoke at the rally with Kalihati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abu Nasar Uddin the chair.
