4 Yrs of Matiranga Arson Attack

Victims still in crisis, feel insecure

The indigenous people who became victim of the massive attacks at Bogapara and Sarbeswar para of Matiranga upazila under the district on August 3 in 2013 are yet to recover the losses.

A sense of insecurity also prevails among them.

Following abduction of a Bangalee motorcycle driver, a group of agitated people attacked seven villages of indigenous people near Taindong Bazar. They set fire to several houses, vandalized many others and looted goods.

Talking with this correspondent, Phani Bhushan Chakma, a ward member of Taindong Union Parishad, said, “The government has built tin-shed houses for 38 families who lost houses in the arson attack. But over two hundred families whose houses were looted and vandalised have not received any government assistance.”

The affected families are still passing their days amid financial crisis, said Bakul Chakma, a social worker at Bogapara.

“The tin-shed houses built by the government are very small and designs of the houses are not compatible with our values,” said Tapan Shasi Chakma, Karbari (village chief) of Sarbeswar para.

Anil Baran Chakma, a victim of the incident, filed a case with Matiranga Police Station on August 5 in 2013, accusing 30 named people and 150-200 unknown others.

He filed an appeal to the court, expressing 'non-confidence' in the police investigation.

Later, the court entrusted the CID of police with the investigation.

The CID submitted their investigation report on December 6 in 2015, accusing 65 people. Based on this report, the case is under process with the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, court sources said.

Meanwhile, 56 people have submitted a revision petition to the District and Sessions Judge's Court against the CID inves

tigation report.

Hearing on the petition is scheduled on September 29.
