Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway remained suspended after railings on the fourth span of the Shahbazpur Bridge on the Titas river in Brahmanbaria broke yesterday evening.

The situation has created a long tailback on both sides of the bridge in Sarail upazila.

The Department of Roads and Highways has asked those plying on the highway to use Sarail-Nasirnagar-Lakhai-Habiganj-Shayestaganj road as an alternative, according to a statement issued by the department last night.

The railings broke down around 6:30pm yesterday and it might take about ten days for repairing the bridge, Shamim Al Mamun, executive engineer of the Department of Roads and Highways told The Daily Star.

The 203-metre-long Shahbazpur Bridge was built in 1963.
