UK minister lauds Dhaka's drive against terrorism

British Minister for Asia Alok Sharma has lauded Bangladesh government for its drive against terrorism and extremism.

"The British minister appreciated Bangladesh for the way the present government is dealing with terrorism and violent extremism in the country," said a press release received here today from the Bangladesh permanent mission in New York.

According to the press release, the British minister made the comment during a meeting with Bangladesh foreign minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, held on Friday at the UN headquarters in New York on the sideline of the 71st session of United Nation General Assembly.

At the meeting, the two ministers discussed a number of issues of common interest including investment, regional economic integration, migration and implications of Brexit.

Mahmood Ali said that the United Kingdom is an important development partner of Bangladesh and there is scope for enhanced British investment in different sectors in Bangladesh especially in infrastructure.

He also enquired about the implications of Brexit in the bilateral trade and economic situation with countries like Bangladesh.

The British minister assured that all development partners would be duly informed about their plan to deal with the new situation.

Ali requested the British minister for taking necessary measures for visa simplification with a view to promoting people to people contact between the two countries.

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque accompanied the foreign minister during the meeting.
