Two jailed for arranging child marriage

Two people were jailed and another was fined for arranging marriage of an underage girl in Sadar upazila of the district on Monday.

They are marriage registrar Kazi Sheikh Rahamatullah, Sarder Shafiqual Alam, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, and Sakina Begum, maternal grandmother of the bride.

Rahamatullah and Shafiqual Alam were awarded one month's imprisonment and fined Tk 1,000 each while Sakina Begum was fined Tk 1,000.

Magistrate Mostafa Monwar, who led a mobile court, said being informed that marriage of Nurnahar, a Class VIII student, and daughter of Daud Sheikh, was going to be solemnised at the office of Kazi Sheikh Rahamatullah at Palerhat Bazar in the upazila at night, they rushed to the spot and foiled the marriage bid.

The marriage registrar was allegedly involved in arranging marriage without any registration in different areas for long, said locals.
