6 children among 7 missing in Meghna trawler capsize

At least seven people including six children went missing after a trawler capsized in Meghna river of Chandpur this morning.

The incident took place due to the dense fog, said Abdul Karim, 50, headmaster of Gazipur Government Primary School, who was passenger of the trawler.

It sank after being hit by an oil-laden vessel in Haimchar upazila around 9:30am, reports our Chandpur correspondent quoting a local authority.

Many of the passengers managed to swim ashore after the incident, Nur Hossain Patwari, chairman of the upazila, said.

According to police record, a woman and six children remain missing in the incident, said Md Waliullah, officer-in-charge of Haimchar Police Station.

The victims are: Nargis, 28, her six years old daughter Shahjadi; Siam, 6, Swapan, 3, children of Alia Begum; Ratan, 2, Manik, 4, children of Mostafa Mridha; and Fahim, 2, son of Shyamoli.

Police and locals are carrying out a search operation.
