Thakurgaon Mahila AL's council held after 10 years

Draupadi Devi Agarwala and Monowara Chowdhury new president, secretary

The triennial council of the district unit of Bangladesh Mahila Awami League (AL) was held at Thakurgaon Zila Parishad auditorium in the town yesterday.

The council, held after long ten years of formation of the last district unit committee in 2006, elected Draupadi Devi Agarwala and Monowara Chowdhury as president and general secretary of the newly elected committee respectively.

Organising Secretary of Mahila AL's central committee Yasmin Hossain inaugurated the council while district unit President of AL Dabirul Islam, also lawmaker from Thakurgaon-2 constituency, attended as chief guest.

After the inauguration, a colourful procession was brought out in the town which followed a discussion at the auditorium.

The country's women should be united with the spirit of the Liberation War to fight terrorism and militancy, speakers said at the discussion.

When Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to expedite the country's development, BNP-Jamaat forces try to stop development by patronising terrorism and militancy, they said.

They urged all to come forward to combat the social menace.

Lawmaker from Thakurgaon-1 constituency Ramesh Chandra Sen was the main speaker at the discussion and district AL's General Secretary Sadek Quraisy, central leaders of Mahila AL Shikha Chakrabarti and Banasree Das, and former district Mahila AL's Women Affairs Secretary Aysha Siddika Tuli were special guests.

Lawmaker (reserved for women) Selina Jahan Lita was the chief coordinator of the council presided over by Draupadi Devi Agarwala, also convenor of the former committee of the district unit of Mahila AL.

A total of 87 councillors attended the council, said district leader of Mohila Awami League advocate Zakia Sultana Mithu.

Second session of the council that ended in the evening elected new leadership for the district unit of the AL's front organisation for the next three years.
