Teacher held on charge of raping student

Police yesterday arrested a teacher of Pigna Girls' High School in Sarishabari upazila of the district on charge of raping a girl student.

Earlier on Monday night, the victim's father filed a rape case with Sarishabari Police Station accusing Golam Masud, English teacher of Pigna Girls' High School, also a resident of Pigna village in the  upazila.

Tipped off, police arrested the accused from Jhawail village under Gopalpur upazila of Tangail around 1:00am yesterday, and in the  afternoon produced him before a court that sent him to jail, said Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Masud, who had been teaching the girl as a private tutor at his home for about eight months, developed a love affair with her and raped her, he said.

Sensing the matter, the girl's father submitted a complaint to the headmaster of the school seeking action against Masud on Monday.

“After verifying the allegation brought against the teacher, I raised the matter in the school managing committee and suspended him the same day,” said Mozammel Haque, the headmaster.
