Tangail mayor, two aides charge-sheeted in arms case

Charges have been pressed against Tangail municipality Mayor Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti and two of his close aides in an arms case.

Sub-inspector Nazmul Hasan of Tangail Detective Branch (DB) of Police, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Judicial Magistrate's Court in Tangail on Wednesday.

The other two charge-sheeted accused are Kader Joarder, a resident of Porabari village in Tangail Sadar upazila, and Nasiruddin Nuru of the same upazila.

On July 30, law enforcers detained Kader from Pabna bypass road in Sadar upazila.

Later, following his confessional statement, police recovered two USA-made pistols, two magazines and three bullets from his house, said Golam Mahfizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tangail DB Police.

During interrogation, Kader told police that Nuru gave him the pistols in presence of the mayor at his (mayor's) College Para residence in the town, a few months ago.

Rashedul Islam, sub-inspector of Tangail DB Police, lodged an arms case against the three the same day, the OC added.

The two others--Mayor Mukti, general secretary of city unit of Awami League, also the younger brother of Tangail-3 (Ghatail) AL lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, and Nuru--have been on the run.
