Sushasoner Jonno Nagarik (Sujan) today expressed concern over holding a free and fair municipal election with the increasing number violence.

“Though the Election Commission has adequate power to act against the violence perpetrators, it remains silent,” said Sujan General Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder.

“Their silence has resulted in the rise of violence indicating doubts over holding a fair election,” he told a press conference in Dhaka this morning.

At least 50 incidents of violence had been reported between December 7 and 26 leaving at least three people killed and 271 others injured, he told the conference.

Mentioning that the Supreme Court has given power to the EC to take necessary actions for holding a fair election, and even to cancel voting if necessary, Badiul said no strict action was seen from the EC until now.

The municipality polls are scheduled to be held on December 30 across the country – the first of its kind to be held under political party banners.
