Nearly 104 brickfields in the district have suffered a big blow as a sudden rain on Monday night damaged huge quantities of raw bricks that were piled in the open field for drying.

The owners of the brickfields claimed that the extent of losses could go up to Tk 9 crore.

Mahmudul Islam Foton, president of Jhenidah Brickfields Association, said in an average around 3 lakh raw bricks in each of the 104 brickfields have been damaged due to the sudden rain.

The owners kept their raw bricks in the open sky for drying as there is very little chance of rain at this time of the year.

Gautam Ganguly, manager of Pal Bricks at Ramnagar village in Sadar upazila, said the sudden raid damaged around 10 lakh raw bricks kept piled at the brickfield causing a loss of Tk 30 lakh.

The owners will have to face serious trouble as most of them took a huge amount of loan from different banks and non-governmental organisations, Mahmudul added.
