Student's murder sparks protest

Fellow students of Gouripur Government College brought out a procession in the college premises yesterday protesting the murder of an HSC examinee of the institution early yesterday.

The deceased, Shakil, 18, was son of Shaheduzzaman of Dapunia area in Gouripur upazila.

Quoting locals and witnesses, police said Shakil had an altercation with one Himel Mia, son of Azharul Islam of Kalabagan area in the upazila, while Shakil was on his way home along with one of his female classmates on Wednesday noon.

At one stage, Himel and some of his friends hit Shakil on the head and chest with bricks, leaving him critically injured.

Shakil was first taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, following deterioration of his condition, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Delwar Ahmed of Gouripur Police Station.

Shakil succumbed to his injuries at the hospital in the wee hours of yesterday, the OC said.

As the news of his death spread, fellow students started demonstration on the campus.

The students caught Emon, 20, an outsider, when he entered the campus and threatened the students not to protest the killing.

Police arrested Emon, son of Jewel Mia of Kalabagan for his alleged involvement in the murder.
