Struggle for study

Brilliant Tuhin Mia, who secured GPA-5 in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations this year, is still uncertain about continuing his future studies due to acute financial crisis.

The sixteen-year old boy, who wants to be a doctor in future, made the result from Rajendra Kishore Government High School in Gouripur upazila as a student of science group.

Finding no way out to continue his college education, Tuhin, who came from an ultra-poor family in Satisa village in Gouripur, is now working as a day labourer at a building construction site in Mirpur area of Dhaka.

While talking to this correspondent over phone on Saturday, Tuhin said he and his elder brother Shahin Mia went to the capital for work purpose about three days ago.

“Before coming to Dhaka, I and my brother worked as day labourers at a brick field in Gouripur,” Tuhin said.

“I am working here to manage my admission fees and other educational expenses,” Tuhin added.

Tuhin, son of a sweetmeat shop worker, said after passing JSC examinations he joined a local brick field as a temporary worker to manage his educational expenses and continued till going to Dhaka for something better.

Tuhin's father Sobhan Mia said due to extreme poverty he could not help his eldest son Shahin and daughter Runa Akhter to continue their study.

Abdul Malek, physical teacher of Rajendra Kishore Government High School, said the boy has a good reputation as an all-rounder in school cricket at upazila and district levels.
