A strike enforced by staff members demanding security kept the shuttle service for Chittagong University students off today, hampering classes and examinations.

Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling party’s student front, forcibly picked up a loco master yesterday for two hours, our campus correspondent reports quoting Md Shahab Uddin, station master of Solosohor Railway Station.

“The loco masters of the shuttle train service are striking in protest and fearing a recurrence,” said Zahangir Hossain, divisional manager of Bangladesh Railway (East Zone) in Chittagong city.

Effectively, the primary mode of transportation from the port city to Chittagong University was suspended this morning. Classes and examinations in most departments were suspended.

Chhatra League insiders said, followers of former campus unit leader Rakib Hossain called strike at campus today and picked up the loco master demanding appointment of candidates of their choice for the university staff.

It is to be noted that the university authority is going to appoint some third and fourth grade employees on May 31 through a syndicate meeting.
