Sirajganj BCL leader attacked in Jamalpur

A Sirajganj BCL leader was badly injured as criminals beat him up in Sarishabari upazila town in the district on Monday night.

The criminals attacked Shahidul Islam, son of poet Altaf Hossain of Shalgram village in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj, on way to his village home. He is joint secretary of Mansurnagar union unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

Police, quoting the victim, said Shahidul was attacked while returning home from Sarishabari upazila town of the district on his motorbike through Sarishabari-Mansurnagar road around 8:00pm.

When he reached Ghoramara area in Sarishabari, unidentified criminals hit him with sticks from behind, causing the rider with the bike to fall into a ditch. Shahidul's left leg was fractured, said Saiful Islam, sub-inspector (SI) of Sarishabari Police Station.

Hearing Shidul's cry for help, locals rushed to the spot and took him to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex, the SI said.

“I am a candidate for the post of president of the union unit BCL committee in the election to be held on December 18. Some people attacked me in such a heinous way to make me lose courage to vie for the post,” the victim told this correspondent.
